As I arrived on the beach at Kihei, I had no idea what a magnificent show was about to unfold before me. I had scouted this area the previous day, observing how the pattern of the waves intercepted each other as they followed the gentle curve of the beach. It was these wave formations that I wanted to make the feature of the shot, but as I watched the horizon begin to tinge with a fiery glow I knew I was also in for a magnificent sunset. I waited until the sun was low enough to cast its reflection right up to the shoreline, then took my exposure from the illuminated ocean so the palm trees remained dramatically silhouetted against the evening sky.
