Nocturnal Glow
Joshua Tree, California
The creation of Nocturnal Glow began with the search for the right Joshua tree—one with enough character, shape, and presence to stand against the power of the moon without being overwhelmed by it. In Joshua Tree, no two trees feel the same. Some twist upward with elegance, others feel wild and sculptural, shaped by time, wind, and the severity of the desert. The chosen tree needed to do more than occupy the foreground; it needed to hold the scene.
A long lens used from a distance, compressing the scene so the moon would appear vast and commanding behind the tree while preserving the relationship between the elements. The result is a composition that feels both surreal and grounded—an image shaped as much by patience and precision as by atmosphere.
At night, the desert reveals itself in layers. The moon, the stars, and the landscape each emerge under different conditions, each carrying their own kind of light. To preserve the integrity of every element, the terrain and tree were photographed with controlled exposure to retain texture and depth. The moon was captured separately to hold its surface detail, brilliance, and scale. The stars were recorded under darker conditions, when the sky could fully open and reveal its quieter beauty.
These elements were then brought together, allowing the final image to reflect not just a single instant, but the full emotional presence of the desert at night. Rather than documenting one fraction of a second, Nocturnal Glow becomes a portrait of the entire experience—still, luminous, and filled with wonder.
